Lake Sheen, Orlando, FL
Lake Sheen, Orlando is a small lake in the city of Orlando. It is one of many lakes in this area that are used for fishing and recreation purposes. Lake Sheen was created by damming up the channel that drained water from nearby Lake Virginia, creating a reservoir to provide drinking water for the growing population of Orlando. The lake has also been a critical ecological habitat because it provides shelter and food for various birds and other animals. In recognition of its importance to wildlife conservation, Lake Sheen was designated part of Florida’s Important Bird Area (IBA) network on July 12th, 2011.
Lake Sheen’s IBA designation means that it will be monitored more closely than other areas which might otherwise go unnoticed while still providing essential resources for wildlife. As explained by the Audubon Society, “The IBA program is a cornerstone of The National Audubon Society’s efforts to protect and restore bird habitat in this country. Thousands of volunteers representing all 50 states and two Canadian provinces work for Audubon Councils, Chapters, and other groups to inventory important bird areas through the National Audubon Society’s Bird-Friendly Community and BirdWatchers program.”
The IBA is part of a monitoring process that birdwatchers have carried out for over 40 years. The information collected is made public so that it can be used to monitor the health of ecosystems, allowing conservationists to identify areas in need of better resources or protection. Both the Audubon Society and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) are working to protect Lake Sheen for its wildlife resources, which include over 200 species of birds. The lake is one of many between Orlando and Kissimmee, often referred to as “The Chain of Lakes,” connected by waterways. The lake is bordered on the east side by a state park, Lake Sheen Recreation Area.
The Audubon Society has identified the following bird species calling Lake Sheen home: Canada goose, light-footed clapper rail, black rails, seaside sparrows, spotted sandpipers, sora, and common yellowthroat, as well as the bald eagle. Lake Sheen is a safe place to live in. There is a police station nearby, and I have not heard of any crimes in this area. Also, Lake Sheen has many resources for wildlife conservation which the Audubon Society monitors. These resources are protected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Lake Sheen is part of the Important Bird Area network, and as such, it is monitored more closely than other areas, which may go unnoticed. The information collected by the Audubon Society allows them to monitor the health of ecosystems, identify areas in need of conservation efforts, and help protect wildlife resources.
